What are cookies?
A “cookie” is a small piece of information sent by a web server to store on a web browser so it can later be read back from that browser. This is useful for having the browser remember specific information.
Cookies can be used by web servers to identify and track users as they navigate different pages on a website and to identify users returning to a website. When the user browses the same website in the future, the data stored in the cookie can be retrieved by the website to notify the website of the user’s previous activity.
Cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember the state of the website or activity the user had taken in the past. This can include clicking particular buttons, logging in, or a record of which pages were visited by the user even months or years before.
Cookies are classified as “persistent” cookies or “session” cookies:
A persistent cookie is a text file sent by a web server to a web browser, which will be stored by the browser and remains valid until its expiry date (unless deleted by the user before that date).
A session cookie will always expire at the end of the user session, when the web browser is closed.
We use Roman Cart on our Millside Direct site to record and store any products you have selected from our sales site pages. This uses a “session cookie” to remember items previously placed in the basket as you continue to shop. This session cookie is deleted when the browser is closed.
• If using Internet Explorer you can block cookies by selecting “Tools”, “Internet options”, “Privacy”, and selecting “Block all cookies”
• in Firefox you can block all cookies by clicking “Tools”, “Options”, and un-checking “Accept cookies from sites” in the “Privacy” box.
• in Safari you you can block all cookies by clicking “Preferences”, “Privacy”, and by checking the option “Always” beside “Block cookies”
Blocking all cookies can have a negative impact upon the usability of many websites however, especially if you use shopping sites, where session cookies are used to remember and record basket choices, for example, as you move from page to page.
